A sleep timer for your computer.

Like the one on your TV. Pick a length, and Nightcap slowly dims the screen and lowers the volume, then puts your computer to sleep.

Also on Windows and Linux. Free and open source. Works offline, no account needed.

Lower volume

What happens as time runs out

Dim screen before sleep
10%

The screen fades

Brightness eases down to the level you choose, starting when you choose. Displays without brightness control get a dimming overlay instead.

Lower volume before sleep
20%

The volume drops

Volume lowers on its own schedule, so the show you fell asleep to trails off instead of cutting out.

Then it sleeps

When the timer ends, your computer sleeps, hibernates or shuts down. Pick one once and Nightcap remembers it.

Run it from the menu bar

Start a 15, 30, 45, 60 or 90 minute timer without opening a window. Pause, add 15 minutes or cancel from the same menu.

Closing the window keeps the timer running. On Windows and Linux, Nightcap lives in the system tray.

Everything comes back in the morning

Cancel the timer or wake your computer, and Nightcap puts brightness and volume back where they were.
